Did you know that Talia's dad, Solomon, has visited the class a few times to share some strategies for cultivating calm, balance and focus in ourselves and to lead some exciting teambuilding activities? Thank you so much for bringing such gifts to our class!
Great class meeting, Axel! He lead the class as we wrapped up our final plans for the haunted house, including the importance of having both scary and silly options so all visitors could enjoy. The class also decided to do a pumpkin carving math activity and organized how they would make sure that they had all the necessary supplies.
The class finger-weaved bracelets as a welcome gift for the Tahitian visitors who visited school last week.
Pumpkin carving mania!
The students worked in small groups to learn about their beloved pumpkin. They had experiential contexts for estimation work. They also used elimination methods to find the weight of the pumpkin guts. They weighed themselves holding the pumpkin and subtracted their weight to find the weight of the pumpkin. They removed the "guts" from the pumpkin and subtracted the weight of the hollowed-out pumpkin from the weight of the whole pumpkin to find the weight of the guts. They used different strategies to accurately estimate and then measure the number of seeds inside. AND they carved awesome jack-o-lantern faces as the grand finale!
It was such a treat to welcome this group of students from Tahiti. They shared their culture through storytelling, song, and dance.

Students have been inferring the evolutionary advantages and adaptations they see in the fossilized remains of an extinct animal. Here they are doing research in a series of reference texts to learn what scientists have discovered about those creatures:
